BM AF-720 Sparrow

My “gray saga” continues with a color that I love and always recommend to my clients: Sparrow AF-720 by Benjamin Moore. It is a super warm brownish gray with middle value. My client used it in her master bedroom (see photo above) and then decided to use it also in her family room since she totally fell in love with it. Another client of mine used it in her media room, while a friend of mine painted an accent wall in this fantastic color.

Sparrow is part of my “safe paint color collection” on Pinterest. It is neutral and very warm; its hue fluctuates between an elegant gray and a sophisticated brown, depending on the light. Provalo, ti piacera’ (try it, you’ll like it).

  1. Sparrow is an easy color to work with. I used it on a french chest in my kitchen to great subtle effect. I pairs well with Malibue Beige, a taupe color which is also subtle. Splashes of red, black, gold, blue even fuscia can excite the effect of these subtle background colors.

  2. This paint has both brown and green in it and depending on the paint base and sheen, can also appear to be a blue grey (and in one case, a blue/grey/green grey which was gorgeous minus the amount of sheen in that particular brand). I also had a paint sample from BM along with the colour chip which significantly varied from the paint that I actually bought despite double-checking the base and sheen levels against the sample before buying. For me, the sample and colour chip showed more brown/grey but the paint I received from BM shows more green/grey (but up on the wall, the brown undertone seems to come through at night [not sure of daylight as it’s winter which means getting up in the dark and coming home in the dark!]). BM just shared their QC check and the paint they sent me matches their colour chip. This colour can be quite the chameleon.

    1. You’re right, the color changes throughout the day. But in my view, as long as it shifts into all sorts of lovely shades, then it’s a real hit.

      1. I agree. I used silhouette in my dining/lounge and love how it turns slightly different colours during the day. Which paint/sheen did you choose? I just tried the eggshell (just a 1/4 pint) and is too shiny for my liking but I am afraid of trying the matte as I’m afraid the green undertones will show up rather than the brown

  3. I’m considering BM Sparrow for the exterior of my house and wonder if you have used it on an exterior.

    1. I have never personally used BM Sparrow for an exterior, nor have I had clients who did, but I would consider it a safe choice. Please note that colors tend to appear slightly lighter when applied outdoors, so keep that in mind when making your decision.
